Puli Kali procession on the occasion of Athachamayam celebrations in Tripunithura, Kerala | photo showcase

— by Vibin Raj | Tripunithura, Kerala Athachamayam is a cultural extravaganza which marks the beginning of the ten-day Onam festival in Kerala. The 2014 festival witnessed the colorful Puli Kali procession on the occasion of Athachamayam at Tripunithura, the suburb city of Kochi. Puli Kali is a 200 year old folk art form of Kerala. Pulikali means 'play of the tigers'. Hence the performers paint themselves like tigers and hunters in vibrant colors and dance to the beats of instruments like Udukku and Thakil. (photo - Jim Ankan Deka) I was not sure what to expect when I walked into the 1st floor of Goethe-Institut building (Max Mueller Bhavan), having arrived a few minutes late for Jumpstart 2014. The panel was already engrossed in a discussion; I took a few awkward minutes to find a seat and settle down before I could make sense of what sounded like a potentially interesting topic. Checking the itinerary I realized that I had not missed much. The introductions were barely over.

Bangalore celebrates with 200th flower show at Lalbagh botanical garden

Replica of Mysore palace at Flower Show at Lalbagh Botanical Garden, Bangalore One of the most awaited events in the Garden City of India is the Lalbagh flower show. Every year on Independence Day of India, a flower show is organized at the Lalbagh Botanical Garden in Bangalore. The event is jointly organised by Department of Horticulture and Mysore Horticulture Society of Karnataka. The 10 day lavishly staged floral extravaganza started on August 8 and went on till August 17, 2014. Among others, the event witnessed a 27-ft high floral replica of the Mysore palace which was recreated with 300,000 roses – red, white and yellow. North East India shines at 'Fragrances From The North East' film fest

Recently, the Directorate of Film Festivals (DFF), ministry of information and broadcasting, in coordination with the northeast division of the home ministry and the ministry of culture, organised a film festival titled "Fragrances from the North East". The Siri Fort Auditorium in the Capital hosted the film festival dedicated to gems from North-east India between August 22 and 24, 2014. The festival showcased acclaimed films from each of the 'Seven Sisters' and provided a glimpse into other cultural aspects of the region with concerts, exhibitions and food stalls. The festival was inaugurated by the Hon’ble Minister for Information & Broadcasting Shri Prakash Javadekar, The opening film at the festival was the 2012 Mizo feature Khawnglung Run (The Raid of Khawnglung).
